SANTORINI

Santorini, Thira or Round (older name) is an island located in the southern Aegean Sea, the island complex of Cyclades, south of Ios and west of Anafi. Distance from Piraeus is 128 nautical miles and 63 nautical miles from Crete. The Athinios Port, the largest port of the island, has been created in the homonym cove. The area is 76.19 square kilometers. Today Santorini is one of the most famous tourist centers of the world.

Santorini is essentially what remains of an enormous volcanic explosion dated back 3,600 years and which created the current geological caldera; a giant central lagoon, more or less rectangular, and measuring about 12 by 7 km (7.5 by 4.3 mi), surrounded by 300 m (980 ft) high steep cliffs on three sides.

Santorini according to the revised classification Koppen Climate is temperate desert climate (BWh) and with Anafi are the only locations in Europe with that kind of climate. Thus, the climate of Santorini is quirky and although it is the southernmost island of the Cyclades is the coldest. This is due mainly to the northeastern winds, but the winter is mild with average temperatures around 10th C. In the winter presented frequent rainfall, while summer is not hardly ever rains leading to Santorini attracts many tourists from around the world.
